The Viennese art historian Karl Swoboda organised concerts in his home in 1920. One of those present was the artist Oskar Kokoschka. While listening, he drew 20 chalk portraits of two women in the audience, one of whom was Kamilla Swoboda, Karl's wife. This subject gave rise to the portfolio Variation on a Theme or Concert.
Four autograph documents are attached, three signed by Oskar Kokoschka and one signed by Olda Kokoschka.
The collection comes from the heirs of Clara Turmayer, a pupil of Kokoschka at the Academy of Fine Arts, who later became a friend of his and his wife. The documents and engravings are dedicated to her.
